Your internet plan probably got faster last year. Your Wi-Fi almost certainly did not.
When nbn rolled out its Accelerate Great upgrades in September 2025, a standard 100/20 Mbps plan on FTTP and HFC jumped to 500/50 Mbps, and 250 Mbps plans went to 750 Mbps. Millions of Australian homes are now paying for speeds their home network was never built to carry. The bottleneck moved. It used to be the connection at the street. Today it is almost always the router sitting behind the TV and the double brick wall between it and the back bedroom.
If your video calls drop in the study, the TV buffers at night, or the kids complain about lag in a room that is only fifteen metres from the router, this guide walks through what actually fixes it in 2026, what is a waste of money, and where a professional install pays for itself.
First, work out if it is the internet or the Wi-Fi
This one test saves people hundreds of dollars, and most skip it.
Plug a laptop directly into your router with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. Then unplug it, stand in the same room, and run the test again over Wi-Fi. Finally, walk to the room where the problem is and run it a third time.
The results tell you everything:
- Slow on the cable too. The problem is your connection or your plan, not your Wi-Fi. Call your provider.
- Fast on the cable, fast next to the router, slow down the hall. This is a coverage problem. Read on.
- Fast everywhere but drops out at 7pm. This is congestion, either from your neighbours' networks or from too many devices fighting over one radio.
Use the same test after any change you make. If you cannot measure it, you cannot tell whether you fixed it.
The free fixes worth trying tonight
Before you spend a cent, rule out the obvious.
Move the router. Wi-Fi radiates outwards in a rough sphere, so a router in the corner of the house throws half its signal into the neighbour's yard. Get it central, get it high, and get it out of the media cabinet. Metal shelving, mirrors, fish tanks, foil backed insulation and concrete all absorb signal. Australian double brick and rendered besser block homes are among the hardest on Wi-Fi anywhere in the world.
Check which band you are on. Modern routers run 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, on Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 gear, 6 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band travels furthest but is slow and crowded, sharing airspace with baby monitors, Bluetooth and your microwave. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands are much faster but stop dead at solid walls. If your phone is clinging to 2.4 GHz in the lounge, that alone can explain a tenfold speed drop.
Update the firmware, and look at your oldest device. Most Australian homes are running router firmware that is years old. A single ancient printer or smart plug can also drag down an entire band by forcing the network into slower legacy modes. Retire it or move it to a guest network.
If none of that shifts the needle, the house is bigger than the router. That is a hardware problem, and this is where most people make an expensive mistake.
Why you should avoid Wi-Fi range extenders
Range extenders, sometimes sold as boosters or repeaters, are the seventy dollar box that seems like the obvious answer. They are usually the wrong one, for three reasons.
They halve your speed. A standard extender has one radio. It must listen to the router and then re-broadcast to your device on the same channel, so every packet gets sent twice. You immediately lose around half the available bandwidth, and often more.
They repeat a weak signal, not a good one. An extender cannot create signal it never received. Placed where the Wi-Fi is already poor, it faithfully rebroadcasts poor Wi-Fi over a wider area. Placed close enough to get a strong signal, it barely extends anything.
They create a second network. Most extenders broadcast their own network name. Your phone latches onto the original network and clings to it as you walk away, refusing to hand over until the connection has nearly died. That is the classic symptom: full bars showing, nothing loading.
The one honest use for an extender is a single dead spot in a small flat where you only need email and light browsing. For anything else, skip it.
Mesh Wi-Fi, done properly
A mesh system replaces your router with two or three units that behave as one network with one name. Your devices hand over between nodes automatically as you move. Good mesh systems also have a dedicated radio, or a wired link, reserved just for talking between nodes, which is what avoids the bandwidth halving that cripples extenders.
Current options on the shelf at JB Hi-Fi, with prices correct at the time of writing:
- Netgear Orbi 370 Series Wi-Fi 7, 2 pack, $359. Apartments and smaller homes, up to about 240 m2.
- TP-Link Deco BE5000 Wi-Fi 7, 3 pack, $549. The safe pick for a typical three or four bedroom home.
- Amazon eero 7 Wi-Fi 7, 3 pack, $649. Large homes up to about 560 m2, with the simplest app setup.
- TP-Link Deco BE11000 tri-band Wi-Fi 7, 3 pack, $1,149. Big or difficult homes, 200 plus devices, 2.5 Gbps ports.
Two things matter more than the headline speed number. The first is tri-band or better, which gives the nodes their own dedicated lane to talk to each other. The second is multi-gig ethernet ports, because a mesh node with only 1 Gbps ports will cap a 2 Gbps nbn plan no matter how fast the Wi-Fi radio is.
A mesh system only works if the nodes are placed correctly. Too far apart and the link between them is weak, which puts you back where you started. Too close and you have wasted a node. Placement is genuinely the difference between a system that transforms a house and one that goes back in the box.
Powerline adapters: internet through your existing wiring
Here is the option most Australians have never heard of, and it solves the hardest problem in home networking, which is getting a real wired connection to a room with no data cabling.
Powerline adapters, also called Ethernet over Power, send network data along the copper electrical wiring already running through your walls. You plug one adapter into a socket near the router and connect it with a short cable. You plug a second adapter into a socket in the problem room and plug your TV, console, desktop or a mesh node straight into it.
They are worth serious consideration when:
- The problem room is behind thick brick, concrete, or on a different level
- You have a fixed device that needs stability, such as a smart TV, gaming console, home office desktop or security recorder
- Running new data cable would mean cutting into walls or ceilings
What to know before you buy. Real world throughput is well below the number on the box. A kit rated at 1300 Mbps will typically deliver somewhere between 100 and 400 Mbps depending on your wiring, which is still transformative in a room that was getting 15 Mbps over Wi-Fi. Both adapters need to be on the same electrical phase and ideally the same circuit, so larger homes and anything with three phase power need checking first. Plug them straight into the wall, never into a power board, and expect older or heavily loaded switchboards to reduce performance.
TP-Link's AV1300 and AV2000 passthrough kits are the common choices at JB Hi-Fi, generally landing between $130 and $200. The passthrough versions include a power socket on the face of the adapter so you do not lose the outlet.
Some models add a Wi-Fi access point at the far end, which is often the smartest fix of all: a real wired backbone through the walls, with clean Wi-Fi generated exactly where you need it.
The gold standard is still a cable
If you are renovating, building, or have accessible roof space, running ethernet to two or three key points in the house is the single best networking investment you can make. A mesh node fed by a cable rather than a wireless link will comfortably outperform any wireless system at any price, and cabling does not become obsolete when the next Wi-Fi standard arrives.
Common questions
Why is my Wi-Fi slow when I pay for a fast nbn plan?
Because the plan speed is delivered to the wall socket, not to your bedroom. Since the September 2025 nbn upgrades, most Australian homes have far more speed arriving than their Wi-Fi can carry through brick walls. Plug a laptop into the router with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. If the cable is fast and the Wi-Fi is slow, the problem is inside your house, not with your provider.
Are Wi-Fi range extenders any good?
Rarely. A standard extender uses one radio to both receive and rebroadcast, so it typically halves your available bandwidth. It also creates a second network name that your phone will refuse to switch to until the first one nearly drops out. A mesh system or a wired access point is almost always the better answer.
Do powerline adapters actually work in Australian homes?
Yes, in most homes. Powerline adapters send data along your existing electrical wiring, so they can reach a room that Wi-Fi cannot. Expect real world speeds of roughly 100 to 400 Mbps from a 1300 Mbps rated kit. How many mesh nodes do I need?
Most three or four bedroom Australian homes are well covered by a two or three node system. Double storey homes, double brick construction and long narrow floor plans usually need three. Placement matters more than the number: nodes spaced too far apart lose their link to each other, and nodes too close together add nothing.
