We have all had it: a tune going round and round in your head, and no idea what it is called. You do not need the words or the singer. If you can hum it, Google can usually find it.
You need the free Google app on your phone. On an iPhone, download it from the App Store. Most Android phones already have it.
How to hum to search
- Open the Google app.
- Tap the microphone in the search bar.
- Tap Search a song.
- Hum, whistle or sing the tune for about 10 to 15 seconds.
- Look through the matches and tap the one that sounds right to play it, read the lyrics or watch the music video.

You do not need perfect pitch. Google listens for the shape of the melody, not how well you sing, so a rough hum is fine.
Tips for a better match
- Hum the chorus. The catchiest part is usually the easiest to match.
- Find a quiet spot, away from the TV or radio.
- If the first try misses, hum a different part of the song and try again.
- If the song is playing nearby, for example on the radio or in a shop, hold your phone up after tapping Search a song and Google can name it straight from the music.
Other ways to get there
- Search widget: if you have the Google Search widget on your home screen, tap its microphone and then Search a song.
- Android shortcuts: on many Android phones you can also find Song Search in Circle to Search and in Quick Settings.
